WINNER! Annise Parker, the first candidate endorsed by Annie’s List, easily trounced her fellow Houston City Council member Bruce Tatro in the race for city controller in the run-off on Saturday, December 6th. Parker earned 62 percent of the vote to 38 percent for Tatro. As a member of the Houston City Council, she has been a consistent leader in achieving balanced public policy and financial reforms for Houston. As Controller, Parker will continue to fight to ensure that services like health care clinics, police and fire stations and after-school programs can stay open. Parker is the second-highest ranking elected official for the City of Houston, overseeing a budget of $2.6 billion.

2004

WINNER! DR. ALMA ALLEN is now Representative Alma Allen. She defeated Ron Wilson, a long-term incumbent. Because there is no Republican opponent, Allen will be sworn into office in January, adding a strong voice to the other women’s voices in Austin. Dr. Allen has served on the State Board of Education for 11 years, taught college, served as a public school principal for 16 years and was a teacher for 14 years.

WINNER! VERONICA GONZALES made history on April 13th when she earned more than 70 percent of the vote against Democratic incumbent Roberto Gutierrez. Because her Republican incumbent withdrew from the race, Gonzales has won her race for Texas Representative. Gonzales, an attorney in McAllen, is a dynamic, articulate rising star in the Democratic Party.
WINNER! YVONNE GONZALEZ TOUREILLES, an accomplished attorney. Yvonne represents Alice, Texas in the State House. She defeated two opponents in the Democratic Primary to earn the Democratic nomination. She defeated conservative Eric Opiela, who is openly anti-choice, in the November, 2004 election. “A mother first, and a lawyer second,” Yvonne is working to restore cuts to the Children’s Health Insurance Program, expand access to health care for rural Texas, prioritize more funding for public schools and teachers, and promote economic development for South Texas.
WINNER! REP. RUTH JONES MCCLENDON of San Antonio, has served as a state legislator since 1996. McClendon has passed legislation to improve wages, curb asthma in children, ensure nursing home safety, and create a medical academy to prepare students to become physicians and practice in inner city neighborhoods. Prior to her election as a legislator, McClendon served as a councilwoman and mayor pro tempore in San Antonio.
WINNER! REP. JESSICA FARRAR was first elected to the Texas House in 1994 and is serving her fifth term as State Representative from northeast Houston. Farrar has passed legislation to expand affordable housing, create early childhood development centers, and promote economic development. Farrar is a champion on issues important to women such as s reproductive rights, domestic violence, sexual violence, access to prenatal care services, access to higher education, and employment equity. Farrar is an architect by profession.
