Janie Barrera is President and CEO of ACCION Texas, a nonprofit
corporation that provides small loans and management training to small business
entrepreneurs. Under her direction, ACCION Texas is now the largest microfinance
lender in the country with a portfolio of more than $20 million. Between 1994
and 2008, ACCION Texas made $70.5 million in loans, producing $113 million in
economic activity and creating nearly 1,700 new jobs. Along with being
nationally recognized, Janie was the recipient of the 2008 Innovator
Award from American Banker, the banking industry’s premier publication. Janie is
a member of the San Antonio Women Hall of Fame, Impact San Antonio, and the
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Ethel Minor, a long-time civil rights leader and political figure in
San Antonio, served as President of the San Anotnio chapter of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1987-1996 and
from 2003-2006. She is the only woman to run the San Antonio NAACP chapter.
During her time as NAACP President, Ms. Minor helped organize the Martin Luther
King, Jr Day March Celebration which is now the largest annual civil rights
celebration in the country with over 100,000 participants. Prior to her work
with the NAACP, Ms. Minor worked as a civilian at Kelly Air Force Base with the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 2004 she was inducted into the San
Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame
